The health care law improves Medicare benefits, such as closing the Medicare Part D prescription drug “doughnut hole,” providing preventive services at no cost to the patient, and increasing access to long-term and community care.

Right Now

  • People in the Medicare Part D “doughnut hole” in 2011 automatically receive a 50 percent discount on their name-brand prescriptions and 7 percent discount on generic prescription drugs.
  • You still have the ability to choose your doctor, nurse practitioner and hospital.
  • Medicare now offers an annual wellness exam and other preventive and screening services, with no out-of-pocket costs.

Down the Road

  • There will be new in-home care options for older persons who need help with daily activities.
  • The law works to reduce Medicare fraud, waste and abuse to help save Americans money on their premiums.
  • The Medicare Part D “doughnut hole” will be closed by 2020.
